Queer Spaces and the Threat of Commercialisation: An Investigation Into the Evolution of Birmingham’s Gay Village

Case study: Gay Village, Birmingham, UK

Words: 4300

Module: ARC6115 Critical Study in Architecture

For my third and final essay, I was free to investigate any case study which analysed the nature of a public space’s “publicness”. For this I chose a local case study, Birmingham’s Gay Village, and explored its function as both a social and economic space. Through my research into the area, alongside the use of numerous pieces of literature focused on queer space, I was able to compare my case study to wider trends of commercialization and gentrification which pose a threat to historic queer spaces.

I was awarded the Oscar Naddermier Medal 2022 for this piece of work at the BCU BSoAD Graduation Show 2022.
